These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts, and
are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and
now published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm
while these exchanges were actually taking place.

ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that
morning?
WITNESS: He said , 'Where am I, Cathy?'
ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?
WITNESS: My name is Susan!

ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?

ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when
you
began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive,
nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and
practicing law.

How to teach your children about racism

When it comes to teaching your kids about the wrongs of racism, perhaps finding yourselves in a packed tram carriage with a woman making xenophobic comments isn’t such a bad thing.
Because any children that witnessed Emma West’s now infamous diatribe against black and Polish passengers will be under no illusions about the nastiness of her behaviour.

It’s just a shame that the little boy on her lap will most likely grow up to share her views.

What the Croydon tram incident – now viewed by millions on YouTube - will have taught most parents is that, try as you might, you just can’t shelter your kids from reprehensible views.

You might live in a multi-cultural area, have friends and family from all backgrounds and visit far-flung destinations every summer but be it homophobia, sexism or racism, your child will surely encounter prejudice in some form sooner or later.

The key thing is to arm your kids with the knowledge and confidence to be able to suss out what’s right from what’s wrong.

Here are a few tips on how:

Acknowledge differences

From the age of three or four, children begin noticing differences between them and others and may start asking questions about people’s skin colour, for instance.

"Parents sometimes panic when they hear these questions, but children are naturally curious, and they're simply trying to learn," says Alvin Poussaint, professor of psychiatry at Harvard University.
Don’t make a big deal of their questions: simply explain that people come in all different colours, shapes and sizes and, although we may look different, we are all the same on the inside.

Consider your behaviour

Kids pick up on everything but don’t necessarily understand the subtleties in our behaviour. So even if you think you are beyond reproach, make sure you aren’t sending messages that will confuse your child.

Do you laugh when someone tells a culturally insensitive joke? Do you mimic other people’s accents to be funny? You may not intend to be racist but a child can get the wrong impression and copy what we say and do.

Talk about it

There are stereotypes everywhere – from the blonde princesses in the fairytales to the villains with foreign-sounding names. Without going over the top, casually point out negative stereotypes when you notice them and let your kids know they’re wrong.

Your child may even come out with generalisations themselves, such as ‘all the girls in my class are rubbish at football’ or ‘all the Asian kids are good at maths’. Tell them that just because some people behave in a certain way, it doesn’t mean that everybody of their gender or ethnicity is the same:

gently discourage generalisations, whether positive or negative.

Explore your family

Use your own family histories to teach your child about what a melting pot of cultures we all are. Even if there are no tales of exotic immigration and it’s just ‘Daddy’s Grandpa came from Wales’, you can still instil in them a sense that they are made up of lots of different cultures and ethnicities and that it is something to be proud of.

Try on someone else’s shoes…

If you hear your child or one of their friends criticise someone because of the colour of their skin, or any other ethnic difference, ask them how they would feel if people were mean simply because of the way they looked. Keep it simple –get them to empathise with how others might feel to be singled out.

Encourage a strong sense of identity

Children who are valued, respected and happy do not tend to be bigots: those who feel angry or frustrated will be more likely to single out others they deem different.

Similarly, building self-esteem is vital for kids who may be in the minority at school: if they want to know why they don’t look like their friends, teach them to be proud of their difference as something special.

Don’t tolerate any prejudice

Children can trade casual insults even if they have no idea of their meaning – take the recent fads for using ‘gay’ or ‘chav’ as terms of abuse. Never tolerate any prejudiced language: explain it is wrong to use such terms as insults and that everybody deserves equal respect. It is never OK to feel superior to any other group of people.

Similarly, when you overhear anyone else talking disparagingly about other races, make a point of explaining to your child that this is wrong – don’t let casual racism slip by. It’s important that they realise racism exists and have the wherewithal to counter it with their own opinions.

Go out and about

Soak up the cultures in your area by going to local celebrations such as the Diwali festival, Chinese New Year, St Patrick’s Day parade or Bengali Mela. Visit museums that specialise in minority ethnic histories or are staging exhibitions about different cultures.

Explore local communities, too – don’t just stick to your usual shops and routes around town, take a stroll through the Orthodox Jewish quarter, buy your weekly shop in the Turkish grocer’s or have lunch in the Pakistani café down the road.

You don’t need to make a big song and dance about diversity for the kids to soak up the message that a mix of cultures is enriching and exciting.

Shambhala is a mythical kingdom, city or place said to be located in the Himalayas, hidden from the view of the uninitiated. Shambhala is talked about in ancient Buddhist and Sanskrit texts and even mentioned in the pre-Buddhist Bön Religion where it is called "Tagzig Olmo Lung Ring". It is also the subject of many books and Hollywood movies, most famously the 1937 film "Lost Horizon", which shows the main actors getting lost in the Tibetan mountains and finding the long lost Paradise of "Shangri-La" as it is called there.

The most ancient Bön Religion speaks of the hidden land as existing in a spiritual-realm, beyond duality, and therefore only being visible to some. According to that tradition it is a place of timeless bliss which is located near Mount Kailash. Mount Kailash is revered in Hinduism and Buddhism as a sort of mythical place of origin for those Religions. The Bön say the land is full of wonderful fragrances and colors and flanked by snow-capped mountains.

According to Tibetan Buddhist Teachings, Shambhala is a "Place of Happiness and Tranquility" and also a place where many religious teachings originated. The place is sometimes seen as a physical location but has also been mythologized to be the Buddhist version of Heaven (called "Pure Land"), full of enlightened inhabitants who have accumulated positive karma and are therefore permitted entry. The place is also repeatedly mentioned in Hinduism (called "Sambalah" there). The "Forbidden Land" or "The Land of White Waters" is also known to non-religious ancient Chinese legends.

Similar to Abrahamic Religions, legend has it that one day when the world is taken over by evil and darkness, an army of good will come from Shambhala to rid the planet of evil and begin a new Golden Age. Some say the date for this event is 2424 A.D. According to Tibetan monks, the place is located "somewhere around McLeodGanj" (shown in the next image), which is also the current home of the Dalai Lama.

Shambhala has captured the interest of many researches, spiritual seekers and even military powers. The Soviet secret police went searching for Shambalah in the 1920s, and the Nazis (Heinrich Himmler and Rudolf Hess) sent expeditions to find Shambhala in the 1930s. It is not known what they found, even though many rumors abound.

Does Shambhala exist physically or spiritually? What have the countless expeditions in search of it brought up? What else is known about it? This thread seeks to be a collaborative effort to find out more.

Greetings ! I am Metatron, Lord of Light, and I embrace you with love, unconditional love.

And so this wonderful day we gather at the United Nations. We pause to fill the room with the Cosmic Light of Unconditional Love. And we tell you it is only Unconditional Love, that will unite nations of your beloved Earth.

We encircle each and every one of you with a nurturing energy and with the field of self empowerment, for each of you are truly Masters on your path of Ascension. It is our purpose to offer you inspiration and clarity, but indeed it is once and always requisite that YOU, as a sacred and sovereign BEING, practice discernment with this and any such 'channeled' message.

And so it is 2011, the cusp of your heralded Ascension. And so we gently ask all of you to look at the world around you for just a moment. What do you see ?

Your media outlooks are reporting war, famine, disasters and economic collapse. . And what is broadcast is what is seen in 3d. It is oft full of gloom and doom, is it not?

But we tell you there is a new sun dawning, and it is indeed the sun of change. It brings the light of the magnificent New Earth. And Dear Ones, we do mean magnificent.

And yes, we know that some of you are thinking, " The Angels are viewing the world with rose colored glasses. Their perspective is a Polly-Anna wash."

There have always been the naysayers on the planet, those who predict gloom and doom and warnings of fear. And these serve a purpose in duality, and certainly a quick glance around the globe would seem to justify their stance. But we tell you it is old energy. And it is not the role of Spirit to ever attempt to scare you or provoke fear. We tell you to give project and create what is positive and to never to let go of your free will. Our message is to tell you of your Divinity, and to tell you as a matter of fact, as a point of truth, that the planet and indeed humanity will Ascend....and are absolutely on track for that to happen. Period.

S.E.A.T.
Now, we will speak this day at the United Nations in the same vernacular that we speak to all seekers, to all aware audiences. We recognize those of you within the Society for Enlightenment & Transformation as members of the 'Transformational Team'. We know you very well, and we honor you for the roles you are playing in this organization.

The Beginning... Not the End
So many are asking what really will happen in 2012. The doomsday prophets are especially in high gear on this topic, are they not? Some of the doom speculators are on particularly fertile ground in this arena, generating fear followings around collisions of comets, asteroids, cataclysmic polar reversals and economic collapse. Whether these naysayers recognize it or not, they feed on the fear the generate.

Dear Ones, we tell you again the Ascension will occur, and humanity have made it so. It is time to let go of old energy, of FEAR. And those of you in this room today must be leaders by example in this process.

Masters, planetary changes will occur, but they are appropriate, and the global cataclysm that some seers have predicted will NOT happen. The planet will Ascend, and humanity will be in tow. In your higher consciousness, that level above fear, not only are you aware of this...you scripted it. And so we say, 'Well Done !"

Now, be aware, there will indeed be the cleansing of the planet, the up shifting of frequency, but it will be on a regional level, and it is for the up-shift, for the higher good. We assure you that were it not for the regional quakes, shakes, winds and waves, devastating as they are, the larger one would inevitably have to take place. And that will not occur precisely because of the gradual shifting. It makes sense, does it not?

Letting Go Of Old Energy
Dear Ones, we tell you again the Ascension will occur, and humanity has made it so. It is time to let go of old energy, of FEAR. Project the positive, and in doing so you co create it. Let go of fear!!!

The fear is deeply programmed, but it is a repeating recording. So many of your religions are rife with embedding of fear-control dogma, warnings and restrictions. They program you with erroneous concepts of 'original sin', poverty vows and focus on what not to do. Their fear based controls have underpinnings of punishment for violators, creating group thought forms to cage you in. This encourages fanaticism and zealotry. It spawns self-righteousness and threats of retribution: our way or else. It's old energy, it's fear. Masters, you can never return to states of lesser awareness, life is expansion.

With the New Earth comes the greater role in co-creation of the reality around you. But that is a responsibility that will enfold through love, not dread.

While you are indeed accountable for your actions, that accountability is to SELF. You are a sovereign spark of the Divine.

Greater Access to Creatorship
So what will happen in 2012? The short answer is that greater access to your divine creativity will occur . The Earth will amplify into 12 dimensions, and by having access to those crystalline fields, you employ greater ability to responsibly create.

As you enter the Ascension, the Crystalline Grid replaces the magnetic grid that has dominated Earth's ebb & flow for eons. As a result 3rd dimensional polarity is optimally constricted within a more stabilized energy-matrix.

What does that mean Metatron, you ask ? It means that the arc-swing of duality will gradually lessen. And it is a gradual process; it will happen on time-release.

And we tell you that it has already begun. That is precisely why the old energy hold-outs are kicking hard. They are drawn out of the shadow, into the crucible for all to see.

As the light grows brighter, the bugs will be attracted to it. But events can do longer be skewed to hide the truth. Look at what is happening in North Africa. Positive change is happening, and much more is to come. That we assure you.

United Nations
And so we say to all of you gathered here, that the S.E.A.T. carries an important role, perhaps more important even than those of you here realize.

For you are the voice of those that cannot speak, and you have the ears of those that will listen. And many within the delegation will listen to you. So do not be discouraged, for we recognize your importance, even if others do not.

We tell you that at any given time half the world is in light and half the world is in night, it is a world of polarity. We say to you that far more than half of humanity are in consciousness shadow, yet to awaken to the light of wisdom. We tell you that enlightenment occurs one heart at a time.

Therefore the light bearers among you must never lose faith, must ever shine brightly, for even a small photon wave makes a transitional illumination. So it is, so it must be with you here today.

1st World Nations
Now, there are some that will say that the prominent nations of what you term the 1st world, the financially dominant and powerful, are more like corporations than countries. Corporations based on profits whose residents are treated more as employees than citizens, especially within the United States.

That the gap between the ' haves & have-nots' is growing increasingly wider. There are some that would say that the overall masses of the United States are controlled and manipulated by media, intoxicated by quantity and enslaved by debt. That sovereignty of the individual has been lost. Yet a light still shines, and it is growing brighter. A new generation across the planet are coming into power, and they will quicken the change.

We tell you the time is nearing in which people will awaken to the knowledge that it is not their encumbering debt that ties them to their beliefs, rather their beliefs that manacle them to the repressing burden of debt.

The global economic system will change, but it will not free-fall & crash irreparably in planetary chaos. To do so in utter chaos would not serve what is to come. Rather it will be forced into change, drastic change, and positive elements will come forward to enable a better way.

The New Earth, the New Humans cannot and will not create a better future by simply discarding the past. The change will come by learning from the past and adjusting in the present, one step at a time. The new Humans in the generations that are coming into power in the next decade will choose a new pattern as a work in progress. A new system of accounting will be established and an innovative economic shift will occur.

The Power of Love
Masters, we have said before and we say again, that when the love of power is replaced by the power of love, humanity will make a quantum leap, but know that love without strength is incomplete. Love without strength is not integral LOVE.

The changes the next 15 generations of humanity will make will create the flowering of the Ascension.

Change is occurring all around you, and it is not hard to see. Look at what has happened and is happening even now in North Africa and the Middle East. And look at how this shift began. It took strength, it took will, it takes courage ! This is what we mean when we say integral LOVE requires strength, and that strength enabled an accomplishment of tremendous magnitude.

The Strength of Love
One courageous young man in Algeria decided enough was enough, and he wasn't going to take the injustice of tyrannical corruption anymore. He extinguished his life with a flame and that fire burnt into the face of tyranny ...and it is still burning. A purifying crucible. Look at what the actions of one pure soul created, it spawned a revolution that is still turning wheels and changing the world.

The energy of the planet is changing, and the 'old guard' of political power over love simply cannot stand in the new paradigm. Nations that rule by brute force are falling, one tyrant, one corrupt government at a time.

And so we say to all governing bodies that unless change is brought from the top, it will be summoned from the bottom, and mightily so.

A New Accounting
Governments must be of the people and by the people. Governments must care for the least of their populace, and not be templates of power play for greed and cunning. Heart and love is the new energy, this is the new way, this is the new accounting.

Governments cannot sit on entitled thrones, and watch carelessly as their citizens struggle to survive. As such political systems of election must change. In some countries the Corporate lobby essentially create an obligation through donation that fetter & compromise the elected officials toward special interests. It becomes a 'catch-22' of legalized bribery, where congress is bought and sold. Candidates cannot pay for the campaign without huge donations, and the corporate donations imply special 'obligation' in order to continue the requisite financial support. This must change, as it shackles even officials who are initially well intended.

Nations of the first world are required to lift the third. But not by military means, not by corporate manipulation. Through sharing. Through understanding that a human life cannot be measured in gold or derogated into ineffectuality by lack of it.

And what of the economy?

Look at what has happened in the past 5 years. Dear Ones, spirit is not short of cash. There is a means for all to have abundance. There is requisite for each soul to have the opportunity of life .

And truth cannot be hidden, the shadow is being removed. Manipulation is manipulation, and corruption is corruption even if it is for the short term hidden in shadowed legalities and sham. The current economic system will morph into a different one in time.

The Middle Path
The middle road between that termed capitalism and that termed socialism will in time be realized, and in time prove the more tenable way. Life is about gain, but gain is not always about monetary profit.

Yet learning to create is part of your puzzle on the Earth plane in duality, and you have and will in time experience every path along the road to the solution of sharing the planetary resources.

War & Conflict
As 2012 approaches, mankind is weary of war, but not enough are yet empowered to force their leaders to stop it.

In days past wars were formed in royal courts and political temples. In current times wars are created in executive military-corporate board rooms.

The victims are but a brief mention in the evening news alongside stock reports. Rarely do countries decide in free-will majority to go to war but they blindly accept their leaders who declare them. If you were to open the curtains of your hidden history, you would know that most of your planets conflicts of war do not occur in happenstance, rather are strategically chosen. There are no enemies to defend against, rather strategies designed to fill bank accounts and increase power reach.

War is an aspect of polarity that will only end as the earth and humanity rise above it. Hating war will never end war. Loving peace will end war by creating peace.

Dear Ones, so much is changing, can you not see that a great shift is taking place ? Could this be what is called the Ascension?

And so what is this 2012 Ascension ? What will happen in 2012?

The Planetary Ascension
Dear Ones, for most of the planet, Dec 21st will come and go, and the world will say nothing has changed.

If you are hearing these words in hopes that the final phrases of this discussion will weave a conclusion to your liking, you will not be disappointed.

But we tell you while the template of expansion occurs in 2012, the mass enlightenment of mankind will not follow for several centuries. 2012 simply gives you more tools to work with.

We of the Angelic realm are not here to solve your problems, rather to encourage you on your path to solution.

And although mankind will not reach a critical mass of enlightenment on the EarthPlane for several more centuries, it is important to remain present and positive , because it will occur, one day at a time, one heart at a time.

Each of you has an opportunity to be impeccable every day. The scenario in which you recognize your own failings, your own conflict with integrity, is the day you encompass Mastery, and indeed it is a journey. Likewise the day you stand in your truth with willingness to recognize another person's truth, you encompass integrity. This truth then applies to nations as well, it applies in macro and micro.

Spirit speaks of LOVE. Spirit does not attack. Every current religion on your Earth has its truths and distortions. Discernment is the key. It is requisite of you to decide what is true and what is not, based on heart and NOT FEAR. No true sacred expression limits its truth, its beauty, to one grouping.

Dear Ones ,choose to live free, choose to release worry and fear, and create your own well-being. Respect and Nurture one another, and embrace LOVE. It is the science and frequency of God. It is the way that the Nation of Humanity will UNITE.

So many are still hanging on for dear life to what was and what should have been what could have been. Lets face it dear ones the tide lines have shifted and you can no longer sunbath upon the shores of the past.  You are the wizards and handmaidens of the light.  You alone hold the magic of ever changing possibility. The outcome of all action is innumerable and cannot be counted upon.  In these times of change many have lost sight of the shore and thrash about drowning in a tidal pool. When the winds of change blow you can ride them soaring to new heights in delight or allow them to keep your tired and exhausted always fighting the force. You now come to a place of struggle or release. The struggle tightens the grip, the release relaxes what binds us, and we are freed from the snare that entraps us  We have been flying against strong winds for far to long we have forgotten that we can change direction in flight, and let the aft winds support us. That which has been against us now supports us.

Don’t subscribe to that which does not know itself. Subscribe to that which houses all knowledge without the limits of time.  The presence of magic is alive and lives in the light. It is seeing God with a child like wonder in all things and all outcomes. It is believing in that which is not seen but can be felt in the heart. Recapture what was once a given.  The universe leaves secret instructs at every turn of your day. Become investigative in nature; seek to see what lies in plain sight. Communicate with a deeper face of nature. She calls to you blindly to share her experience, as she changes costumes and acts.

A natural rhythm needs to be established as you walk the sacred path of life not as a stranger but a partner. See the magical qualities of life and step back from that which overwhelms you. Nature is a great healer, look at life from a different angle, and make your choices accordingly. When you see beneath the surface you see with the eyes of God. See with a great hope and a deep knowing. Become a seer of what is invisible to the human eye but not the human heart.  A State of Grace is your natural state of being.  It is what you naturally are without all the instrumentals and the dialogues of being too human.  The State of Grace is what you were before you came to Earth.  It is the point of reference in-between each incarnation.  It is a place of relaxing into your light.  It is a natural rhythm for you.   It is the rhythm of the Creator that beats within you with no resistance, but a surrendering and a flowing as a waterfall.

A state of grace says 'We Surrender', we do not try to fight our karma, our past, our family, or life.  But we allow our natural God essence to take us beyond human understanding into a point of reverence, into a point of sacredness, and into a point of humanness that is sanctified and holy.  A state of grace says 'we the people of the Earth now allow the divinity in us to take us above the darkness – not through the darkness'.  It is allowing the light within you the freedom to be in its natural state of being, releasing it from the pressures and decisions of being human.  It is going back to your natural roots. A place of trusting the universe and accepting that whatever is issuing itself as an emotional decree, a financial decree, an energetic decree, or a personal decree -- is issued by the divinity within you.  In this state of grace, you will supersede the negativity and you will relax into your light. when you each let go of what burdens you, what saddens you, and allow the cracks within you to be healed, you can then focus on the return trip into love. 

When you are feeling pressured by your world, immediately focus on what you love.  Take that vibration of what you love (whether it is a flower, a song, a child, a puppy, a giggle, a laugh, a memory) and place it into what brings you sadness what hurts.  love will change the molecular content of the experience that you are embedded in.  Shift the molecules.  What you see as a roadblock and negativity is but a molecular essence that has not shifted into a state of grace, by  love. 

You are the director and the conductor of the concert of your life.  Understand that the molecules of love can dissolve obstacles and move mountains. Nothing is impossible when you saturate it with the living energy of love. Immediately call in the energy of grace to something that saddens you, and hurts you. Hand it over to the divinity within yourself and within the situation.  Grace is a lighter energy and immediately you will feel a lifting.  You are not getting out of doing your homework in that learning situation.  But you are invoking a molecular change through the essence of love into it. 

Shift everything that seems to be an obstacle.  When something angers you, immediately train yourself to think of something that brings you joy, something that you love and then re-focus that energy into that situation and you will change it.  You will break down the Walls of Jericho with the soundings of your heart and the soundings of love.  it is your duty, it is your mission to keep a love list.  Everything that brings a smile to your face, everything that brings a laugh and a giggle to your heart and everything that softens you.  Keep a list of love.  Refer to it when you are angry, when you are sad, when you are in distress.  Change your life.  Invoke the state of grace in everything that you walk through on a daily basis.  “I now invoke a state of grace in this situation and I now ask for the molecules of love to saturate it”.  You will feel yourself lifted, no longer sinking in despair. 

Everything in your life is designed of divinity and by divinity.  It is a divine expression of a divine aspect of your self that is asking to be healed, that is asking to be embraced, that is asking for love.  Otherwise it would not be blocking your way. When you are watching the sadness on your earth and feel helpless to change it, think of something that you love.  You need a reference point. You need to be reminded what brought you love the last time you thought of it, the last time you experienced it. 

When you shift yourself, you shift the outcome of what stands in front of you.  Your day should be a 24-hour state of grace.  A state of grace says, “I trust what I have in front of me.  I trust my choices.  I trust God, I trust the world, I trust Mother Nature.” What do you fear the most?  You fear people.  What lives within people, but the essence of God.  You do not trust the divinity within them, which is just a hair away from the divinity within you.

I am he who is known as Metatron.  I watch the words of your world.  I watch your thoughts.  I am underwriter for all expressions verbally.  My presence will be seen and felt more often in the up coming times.  As you invoke the states of grace, also realize that within that molecular content of Grace sits every molecule of Light.  Just by using the word grace, saying grace, speaking grace, knowing someone named Grace – you invoke the presence of the Light.

Each time a heart opens, it is as a million rainbows and a million roses opening simultaneously.  In your imagination you can not fathom how much love you can hold, how much love you are capable of feeling. you are still very afraid of the feeling of love. Believe it or not you are just entering into a countable and measurable essence of love.   I, as all light and all beings of light, are with you continually.  We are one.  Your hearts are small and tender.  Some of them are shriveled.  But we hold them as a small bird that has fallen from the nest of life.  We will nurse you back into the fullness of love.  I go.

Tasting What You Breathe

If, as the saying goes, the body is a temple, then we are still discovery ever new secret chambers and passageways. In an unexpected discovery that reminds us that the human body is just full of surprises, researchers have learned that there are taste receptors not only in our mouths, but in our lungs as well.

A team of scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore set out to study the human lung muscle receptors that regulate the airway passages. By grinding up the lung muscle tissue and examining the genetic configuration of the chemical receptors, they found bitter-taste receptors in the lung tissue previously only known to be present on the tongue.

These receptors are structurally identical to the taste receptors on the tongue, except those on the tongue are clustered in taste buds that communicate with the brain. The receptors in the lungs only send messages to the smooth muscle cells. But both types respond to substances with a bitter flavor.

The researchers exposed bitter-tasting compounds to mouse and human airway tissues and found that it reopened closed airways in mere seconds. This result was the exact opposite of what they were expecting to prove. The theory they presupposed was that, because many plant-based toxins taste bitter, the lung's taste receptors would cause a restricting response in the chest. This would result in coughing, thereby provoking the person to leave the area in which the inhalants were present. In other words, they thought it would trigger a reaction similar to an asthma attack.

When a person experiences an asthma attack, the involuntary muscles in the lungs tighten and constrict the airways, or bronchioles, that carry oxygen through the bloodstream to the rest of the body. This results in shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. The most common chronic disease in children, asthma is usually triggered by smoke, dust, dander, and other irritants.

But with each of the bitter substances the researchers tested on the lung tissue, the receptors were activated and opened the tubes of the lungs more significantly than any drug currently being used to treat asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

While this is not a cure for asthma or any other lung disease because it does not deal with the inflammation or underlying causes of these illnesses, this finding does offer a new method of opening the airways of the lungs. It is an entirely different approach to treatment that could potentially replace or improve upon the drugs that are presently being prescribed, possibly leading to the creation of the first new breakthrough in asthma therapy in 50 years.

Unfortunately, eating bitter foods has no effect on the airways because the substances are not reaching the taste receptors of the lungs. Instead, bitters have to be broken down into a spray form that could be delivered through an inhaler and sent directly to the lungs in a strong concentration. Some of the compounds that the researchers used in lab experiments with success were quinine and chloquine, which are typically employed for the treatment of malaria, and the artificial sweetener saccharin.

Both the long- and short-acting types of bronchodialators presently used by the 23 million asthma sufferers in the United States are beta agonists. They single out the beta 2 adrenergic receptor, which works to expand constricted airways. But the bitter aerosols developed for this study opened the airways up to 90% of their original volume in a few seconds. These results were three times more effective than the beta 2 agonist inhalants used in the experiment.

The researchers also made a discovery about the involvement of calcium in the lungs. When the bitter substances came into contact with the lung muscles, the amount of calcium present rose and aided in the relaxation of the muscles. The taste receptors in the lungs seem to have their own stores of calcium to put to work.

All of this can provide quite a bit of food for thought for researchers and drug manufacturers alike, and hopefully will eventually lead to some major improvements in the way we treat asthma and other airway-related ailments. In the meantime, you can look at that bottle of Angostura Bitters in your liquor cabinet with newfound respect.

Cursing Kills Pain Redux

Apparently, analyzing the benefits of swear words appeals quite a bit to some researchers from Keele University in Great Britain,1 since they just came out with their second consecutive study on the subject. I wrote a few years ago about a study that shows that yelling swear words when experiencing pain can actually help the sensation of pain diminish. That study focused on how cursing benefits men versus women. Now the same Keele University team reports on how well the pain relief conferred by cursing works for seasoned profanity users versus those who rarely curse.

This time, scientists asked 71 subjects, aged 18 to 41, to fill out questionnaires detailing "how often" they swore -- apparently, this is a crucial refinement over the previous study. They also asked them to report what words they would say if they accidentally hit their thumb with a hammer and what words they'd use to describe a table.2 Then, subjects immersed their hands in a bucket of ice water. They were told to let out a string of swear words (featuring those words they'd use if a hammer hit the thumb) while keeping their hands in the water as long as they could stand it. After recovering, they put their hands back in the water and let loose a string of those words they listed to describe a table.

It turns out that the efficacy of swearing as a palliative depends a great deal on how much you swear in daily life -- with the bottom line being "less is more." Those subjects who don't normally indulge in foul language kept their hands in the water far longer when they cursed compared to when not cursing. In contrast, those subjects who use profanity frequently were four times less likely to get relief from uttering expletives. So much for websites devoted to "The All-Time Greatest Moments in Cinematic Swearing."

So once again, we have evidence that cursing is good for the body, even if it doesn't do much for the soul. In any event, it could add an interesting dimension to medicine if doctors start prescribing curse words to heal your pain the way they prescribe aspirin to cure your heart. First, the medical intake form would have to ask, "How often do you curse?" right next to "How often do you exercise?" so that the physician could figure out the likelihood that you've developed curse-resistance. Assuming that you're normally a light curser, you could get a prescription that reads: "Say 10 'gosh-darn-its' (or something to that effect) and call me in the morning."

All joking aside, Dr. Richard Stephens, the research director, doesn't see cursing as a prescriptive path. He says, "While I wouldn't advocate the prescription of swearing as part of a medicalized pain management strategy, our research suggests that we should be tolerant of people who swear while experiencing acute pain. Indeed, I occasionally receive letters from members of the public recounting episodes in which they, as adults, have been chastised for swearing during a painful episode. They feel that my research findings vindicate their actions."

As I've written before, while scientists can't say for sure why the curse-effect works, they think it has to do with the fight-or-flight response. When faced with danger, the hypothalamus triggers a physiological reaction that releases certain nerve cells and chemicals like adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream, to help the body prepare for battle and ease possible pain. Cursing is an aggressive act that signals the body to release those pain-relieving chemicals.

At least, that's the scientific theory put forth by those involved, but a reader of England's The Telegraph, where a report on the study got published, had a totally different take.3 David Thomas says, "[It's also possible that] swearing may interfere with the use of common sense and delay the removal of one's hand from the painfully cold water. Spending one's energies swearing rather than acting intelligently is not laudable."

Mr. Thomas does have a point. Plus, those who see this report as a vindication of their foul tongues must acknowledge that the relief from cursing is short-lived. You get a bit of a break for the seconds following the onset of pain, but then the throbbing begins.

On the other hand, it is good to know that profanity does play a useful role, since almost everybody does swear, according to Timothy Jay, who writes about cursing in Perspectives on Psychological Science.4 According to Jay's research, the average person swears about 0.3% to 0.7% of the time. (When I read a statistic like that, I just have to believe that some researchers simply have far too much time on their hands.)

Jay extols cursing benefits such as emotional release and a safe alternative to punching people out. Plus, from the pure language point-of-view, he says, curse words sometimes offer emphasis that other words simply can't convey as well.

If you absolutely can't abide cussing and refuse to indulge, what can you do in the moments following injury to get some instant relief, short of grabbing the NSAIDS? Try popping arnica if you like homeopathy, or take some Rescue Remedy if you like flower remedies. Or, you can do a relaxation technique or an energy meridian healing on yourself before the pain intensifies. Or you can simply use a top-of-the-line herbal pain-relief oil. In fact, you can do it all, damn it, including peppering your language with the bad words of your choice.

The Goddess of Mercy, Gentle Protectoress, Bodhisattva of Compassion

Known as The Goddess of Mercy, Gentle Protectoress, Bodhisattva of Compassion, even the savior of seamen and fishermen, she holds many titles. The spelling of her name varies, but it is not so much the arrangement of letters as it is the effect that her spoken name produces on those with a Buddhist background, similar to a reaction in the West when one is speaking of the Virgin Mary. In both cases, it invokes the feeling of compassion and unconditional love.

Indeed, her force is compared to Mother Mary in the West, Green Tara in the Tibetan culture, the Virgin of Guadeloupe in Mexico, and many other ancient goddesses, the matriarchy of old. You might call her the Buddhist Madonna, or, as She calls herself, "The Mother of all Buddhas".

By her own words, she is a complex energy presence. Thus, when asked her about her incarnations as "Kwan Yin," this involves many persons that have embodied and reflected this energy in their lives on earth, as far as we can understand. According to Sucheta's channelings, the closest association of Kwan Yin being linked to a person energetically in recent times is Miao Shan, an ancient Chinese princess who was known for her great compassion.

Here is a quote from Kwan Yin about this:

"Although I am Bodhisattva, I am energy. I am not a person.

Basically, the Kwan Yin energy was never in one single body. It has always been a great part of the energy of all of compassion of all the Universe. What you see in front of you [Marjorie] is one person who has been able to tap in and release for a period of time, so that she can let us be a part of her reality and to share that with you so that you can be encouraged, and that you can also bring forward the part of you that knows the truth."

The name "Kwan Yin" is a derivation of a Chinese name for the goddess that is this energy of motherly compassion. This is really a description of her energy ("she who hears the cries of the people") which has become accepted as her name on earth. Although there are variations, the feeling is the same. She responds to the heartfelt needs and anguish of the people of earth regardless of background or belief.

Being one of the "mother" goddesses, she is especially connected to those in need of any kind of help, be they sick, lost, frightened or simply in unfortunate circumstances. She is a great protector and benefactor of the weak, the ill and especially the children and the babies.

Many erect alters to Kwan Yin, the "bestower of children" -- the one who hears the prayers of anyone wanting to conceive a child -- to increase their fertility. There is a connection with the care of souls, both during birth and after death. Taoists invoke her presence to free newly departed souls from the judgement of the underworld. She guards the souls of the newborn and guides them to their new parents.

Her range of influence is vast, from China to Korea and Japan, all the way down into Malaysia. She has super-ceded her Buddhist traditions and jumped into the realm of a more universally venerated goddess, now known to those of many different faiths and sects. Her image can be found on most any alter of worship in temples, homes, schools, shops, restaurants, out of the way grottos and even on the dashboards of taxis.

Entwined in the faith of Buddhism, her first real appearance in literature seems to be around 400 AD. By that time, Buddhism had been around for nearly 1000 years, spreading from its birthplace in India to China, and subsequently to Korea, Japan and Tibet.

Devotees of Avalokitesvara, or Avalokita, Bodhisattva of Compassion of Indian Buddhism, brought the concept of Avalokita to China. There, Avalokita, or Kwan Yin, was adopted as a god in the male form and later was gradually changed by some to resemble a female, lending a rather androgynous element to her.

By 1200 AD she was definitely a female portrayed in flowing robes.

Avalokita is depicted with many arms, hands and heads, sometimes with an eye in each palm representing the ever watchful omnipresent mother, ready to immediately reach out in any direction to alleviate suffering.

In Buddhist mythology, it states that Avalokita was born from Amitabha Buddha's right eye, after which he proclaimed, "Om Mani Padme Hum" -- Hail to the jewel in the lotus -- a sentiment of her preciousness to him. Some believe she is actually an incarnation of Amitabha Buddha. The Chinese translation of the Sanskrit Avalokita is Kuan shih Yin, the full form of the shortened Kuan Yin, or Kwan Yin.

It is said in ancient writings that she was embodied as Miao Shan (whose name means "wonderfully kind one"), a Chinese princess who lived about 700 BC. This legendary Buddhist saint is said to have spent nine years living on an island off the coast of China, healing, meditating and saving sailors from shipwreck. This island became a place of worship and pilgrimage for many, especially in one of the caves there, which was transformed into a shrine dedicated to Kwan Yin.

She is called a Bodhisattva, literally a "being of bodhi, or enlightenment."

Bodhi is the spiritual energy that produces an urge for enlightenment, emanating Wisdom and Compassion. The Buddhas are the primary stream from this energy, the secondary stream from the Buddhas being the Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is any soul which has attained enlightenment and has freed itself from the karmic cycle of rebirth, but which has forgone the bliss of Nirvana, the merging with the
Creator, in order to help all the rest attain their enlightenment. This is their vow. It is said that as she was about to enter heaven, she paused at the threshold as the cries of the world reached her ears, and she returned to help them. She is also called an Ascended Master, which essentially means that one has learned all their lessons, transmuted their karma, and is not compelled to experience being reborn into a physical body if they do not desire it.

In depictions she is shown with pearls of illumination in one hand; and with the other she pours out "sweet dew", the nectar of Wisdom and Compassion from a small vase, blessing all with physical and spiritual peace. Her cupped hands are a symbol of the womb and the universal feminine principal. She sometimes holds a sheaf of ripe rice, a metaphor for sustenance supplied.

The dragon is often seen with her, a symbol of wisdom, strength, and the power of divine transformation. A Divine Mother, always there are children around her or being held by her. There are two small attendants that show up periodically, a "young man of excellent capacities" and the "daughter of the Dragon King," both related to the legendary Miao Shan. As reference to fishermen, sailors and water, she can be seen on a boat or a lotus flower crossing the sea, rising from the sea on the back of a dragon. Other things related to her are a dove, a scroll of prayers which are the teachings of Buddha, a rosary of white crystal beads showing the rounds of rebirth, and a willow spray with which she sprinkles the divine nectar of life.

The Origin of Kwan Yin, or Miao Shan

There are many legends about the origin of Kuan Yin, but this in one of the most popular.

In 7th century China, a king had three daughters, the youngest named Miao-Shan. At the time of Miao-Shan's birth, the earth trembled and a wonderful fragrance and flower blossoms sprang up around the land. Many of the local people said they saw the signs of a holy incarnation on her body.

While the king and queen were amazed by this blessing.

Unfortunately, they were corrupt and saw little value in a child who appeared pure and kind. When Miao-Shan got older, the king wanted to find a husband for her. She told her father she would only marry if by so doing she would be able to help alleviate the suffering of all mankind.

The king became enraged when he heard of her devotion to helping others, and forced her to slave away at menial tasks. Her mother, the queen, and her two sisters admonished her, all to no avail.

In desperation, the king decided to let her pursue her religious calling at a monastery, but ordered the nuns there to treat her so badly she would change her mind. She was forced to collect wood and water, and tend a garden for the kitchen. They thought this would be impossible, since the land around the monastery was barren. To everyone's amazement, the garden flourished, even in winter, and a spring welled up out of nowhere next to the kitchen.

When the king heard about these miracles, he decided that he was going to kill Miao-Shan. After all, the nuns who were supposed to have tormented her. But as his henchmen arrived at the monastery, a spirit came out of a fog of clouds and carried her away to safety on a remote island.

She lived there on her own for many years, pursuing a life of religious dedication.

Several years later, her father became seriously ill. He was unable to sleep or eat; his doctors believed he would certainly die soon. As he was about to pass, a monk came to visit the king. The monk told the king he could cure the monarch, but he would have to grind up the arms and eyes of one free from hatred to make the medicine. The king thought this was impossible, but the monk assured him that there was a Bodhisattva living in the king's domain who would gladly surrender those items if asked.

The king sent an envoy to find this unknown bodhisattva. When the envoy made the request, Miao-Shan gladly cut out her eyes and severed her arms. The envoy returned and the monk made the medicine. The king instantly recovered. When the king thanked the monk; he chastised the king by saying, "You should thank the one who gave her eyes and arms." Suddenly, the monk disappeared. The king believed this was divine intervention and after ordering a coach prepared headed off with his family to find and thank the unknown bodhisattva.

When the royal family arrived they realized it is was their daughter, Miao-Shan, who had made the sacrifice. Miao-Shan spoke up, "Mindful of my father's love, I have repaid him with my eyes and arms." With eyes full of tears and hearts full of shame, the family gathered to hug Miao-Shan. As they did so auspicious clouds formed around Miao-Shan. The earth trembled, flowers rained down, and a holy manifestation of the Thousand Eyes and Thousand Arms appeared hovering in the air.

And then, the bodhisattva was gone. To honor Miao-Shan the royal family built a shrine on the spot, which is known as Fragrant Mountain.

BODHISATTVA (also spelled Boddhisattva): Literally means "enlightened being"; a soul who, through compassion and altruism, has earned the right to leave this world of suffering and enter nirvana, but has chosen instead to stay on Earth to instruct others to until all beings are enlightened. A Bodhisattva acts as the key figure in Mahayana Buddhism.

Last chance to save Kyoto deal at climate talks

DURBAN (Reuters) - Almost 200 nations began global climate talks on Monday with time running out to save the Kyoto Protocol aimed at cutting the greenhouse gas emissions scientists blame for rising sea levels, intense storms, drought and crop failures.

Poor nations say wealthy countries became rich using coal, oil and gas and that they must be allowed to burn fossil fuels to escape poverty. Rich nations say major developing economies, such as China, India and Brazil, must submit to emissions cuts if the world has any chance of halting dangerous climate change.

The stakes are high. Two U.N. reports this month said greenhouse gases had reached record levels in the atmosphere and a warming world would likely bring more floods, stronger cyclones and more intense droughts.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said global average temperatures could rise by 3-6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century if governments failed to contain emissions, bringing unprecedented destruction as glaciers melt and sea levels rise.

It said an 80 percent rise in global energy demand was set to raise carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions by 70 percent by 2050 and transport emissions were expected to double, due in part to a surge in demand for cars in developing nations.

E.U. climate negotiator Artur Runge-Metzger told a news conference unless progress was made: "(People) will just lose confidence in this travelling circus. How high must the water get in these conference places before the negotiators start deciding?"

Flash flooding from heavy rain killed at least six people in Durban the night before the talks opened.
The Kyoto Protocol commits most developed nations to legally binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The talks in Durban are the last chance to set another round of targets before the first stage of the protocol ends in 2012.

"It may seem impossible, but you can get it done," Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, told delegates.

SMALL STEPS

Diplomats hope there will be some progress on funding to help developing countries most at risk from the effects of global warming, particularly in Africa and small island states.

Rich nations have committed to a goal of providing $100 billion (64.3 billion pounds) a year in climate cash by 2020. But the United States and Saudi Arabia have objected to some aspects of the Green Climate Fund that will help manage it.

There is also a chance that some nations will pledge deeper emissions cuts.

But the debt crisis hitting the euro zone and the United States makes it unlikely those countries will provide more aid or impose new measures that could hurt their growth prospects.

E.U. envoys said they want a new deal for emissions cuts reached by 2015 and in place by 2020, and it will only be effective if major polluters sign on.

Any accord depends on China and the United States, the world's top emitters, agreeing to binding action under a wider deal by 2015, something both have resisted for years.

Russia, Japan and Canada say they will not sign up to a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol unless the biggest emitters do too. The United States, which never ratified the protocol, warned its commitments would be tied to pledges made by major emerging economies.

"The structure of a legal agreement in which we are bound and those economies are not is untenable. It will not solve the problem. It will not be accepted in the United States," U.S. climate envoy Jonathan Pershing said.

Negotiators said there may be a deal struck with a new set of binding targets but only the European Union, New Zealand, Australia, Norway and Switzerland were likely to sign up

The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) said: "If Durban puts off a legally binding agreement and closes the door on raising mitigation ambition before 2020 many of our small island states will be literally and figuratively doomed."

Despite nations' individual emissions-cut pledges and the Kyoto pact, the United Nations, International Energy Agency and others say they are not enough to prevent the planet heating up beyond 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, a threshold beyond which scientists say the climate risks becoming unstable.

Countries agreed last year in Cancun that deep emissions cuts were needed to hold temperature rises below 2 degrees C.

An After Meal Digestive Treat

When considering what to write about for the week of Thanksgiving I had initially thought I would come up with some fabulous holiday food recipe.

But when I really thought about it I realized that most people already have a long list of holiday recipes. In fact, many people have too many yummy foods to indulge in. What people don’t often have planned into their holiday meals is a way to counteract the sudden deluge of all those rich foods.

Now I don’t want to assume that anyone reading this newsletter is going to overeat this holiday season. I mean, that rarely happens on Thanksgiving right? Who really wants seconds of mashed potatoes, turkey and stuffing swimming in gravy?

So really this newsletter is for those of us who have “friends” and “family” who may overindulge at the holiday feasts.

Eating too much in one sitting may be initially rewarding to our taste buds but inevitably leads to fatigue, bloating and other gastric discomforts.

These common digestive complaints aren’t limited to overeating, however. Many people experience these symptoms daily due to improper diet and an unhealthy digestive system. The rich foods of the holidays can further exacerbate a person’s weak digestion.

In this HerbMentor News article, we are going to look at some herbs that help promote digestion. Not only can these herbs help lessen common digestive complaints such as bloating or gas, they can be enjoyed regularly at meals to promote strong digestion and prevent these problems from happening.

Let’s take a closer look at the three herbs in our recipe.

Ginger

I probably don’t have to tell many of you that ginger is one of my most favorite herbs. Spicy and diffusive, it’s one of those herbs that is well suited to a myriad of woes, especially if the person has symptoms of stagnancy or coldness such as bloating, feeling colder than others in the room, and a white coating on the tongue.

Ginger is great as a digestive herb. One of its most well known uses is for nausea and for settling an upset stomach. Ginger is aromatic and diffusive, helping to nudge along stagnant digestion with symptoms of bloating, gas and bad breath. As a powerful anti-microbial herb it can address pathogens in the digestive system as well.

One reason I end up recommending ginger to a lot of people is that it is easy to find at the local grocery stores and most people enjoy the taste. For those people who aren’t herbalists and therefore not used to drinking and eating things most people would consider bizarre, ginger is an accessible and effective herb.

Sometimes ginger is too spicy for people with excess heat symptoms. If you avoid spicy Mexican food and wasabi sauce, then ginger probably isn’t the herb for you. For this recipe you can simply use less or omit it.

Fennel

A s a medicinal herb, Fennel often gets its claim to fame by helping soothe infants with colic who are distressed due to gas and other digestive discomforts. Of course, what works for our littlest ones also works quite well for us. This carminative herb works to dispel gas and promote digestion.

Fennel is a strong anti-spasmodic herb. It is often formulated with laxative herbs like rhubarb and senna because it counteracts the griping or stomach cramps often caused by these strong cathartic plants.

Like ginger, fennel is also anti-microbial. It has even been shown to be effective in drug-resistant tuberculosis.

If you enjoy eating at Indian restaurants you’ve probably noticed the bowl of fennel on your way out the door. The recipe in this newsletter is fashioned after that idea.

Dried Orange Peel

Most of us eat the fruit of an orange and throw the rest away. In doing so we are throwing away the most nutritious part! Chinese medicine has used a variety of citrus peels for thousands of years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine dried orange peel is used to “transform” phlegm in the Lungs or the Spleen and to drain dampness. From a western perspective we can consider this herb when we want to ignite our metabolic fires and promote digestion.

For this recipe you’ll need...

o 1 tablespoon minced candied ginger...

o 1 tablespoon dried orange peel powder
o 3 tablespoons fennel seeds

After you’ve gone to all the trouble of making the candied ginger, this recipe is really quite simple.

First mince the candied ginger.

Measure out your fennel seeds.

Measure out the orange peel powder.

And then mix them all together.

We keep this delicious mixture on our dinner table in an airtight container. We eat about a teaspoon or more after meals.

You’ll notice that this is a small recipe. Feel free to make this in much larger batches!

Apricots in brandy

Ingredients

Urgent - Before you start...

To sterilise a jar, wash in hot soapy water, then rinse thoroughly in very hot water and drain. Put onto a baking sheet and place in an oven preheated to 140C/Gas 3/fan oven 120C for 10 minutes, then remove and cover with a clean tea towel until use.

• 225g whole dried apricots
• Juice of 1 large orange or 4 tbsp fresh orange juice
• 100g granulated sugar
• 100ml brandy
• Ice cream or Greek yoghurt, to serve

• 8oz whole dried apricots
• Juice of 1 large orange or 4 tbsp fresh orange juice
• 3½oz granulated sugar
• 3½fl oz brandy
• Ice cream or Greek yoghurt, to serve

Recipe

Method: How to make Apricots in brandy

1 Soak the apricots in 700ml of water and the orange juice overnight. Drain the liquid from the apricots and measure 300ml into a saucepan. Arrange the apricots in a sterilised jar.

2 Make a light syrup by dissolving the sugar in the drained liquid. Bring to the boil for 2 minutes, then cool. Add the brandy to the syrup and pour over the fruit, making sure that all the fruit is covered.

3 Seal, cool and store in a cool place for 3 weeks before using.
