Vedic Astrology

A question I am most asked is what Vedic Astrology thinks of end of the Mayan Calendar and 2012,
which coincides with major destruction.

Wikipedia writes – The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to
which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012. This date is regarded
as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar.

The Vedic philosophy thinks of life as cyclical- where there are periods of time known as Yugas and
within the yugas – there are various cycles of creation, preservation and destruction. There are 4 main
Yugas and at the end of each Yuga the world lies dormant for a time when the cycle of creation
begins again. The length of each of the Yugas is given in Shrimad Bhagavatam as:

                                                 Satya yuga -1,728,000 years

                                                 Treteya yuga - 1,296,000 years

                                                 Dwapar yuga - 864,000 years

Kali yuga (present time) – 432,000 years

Within these great cycles, the process of creation, preservation and destruction continues.
The three main Hindu Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are incharge of overseeing this process.
The world is regarded as a continuum, process never ending. After Kali yuga, the whole process
begins again.

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva - the gods of creation,
                                                                 preservation and destruction

2012 does not coincide with the ending of the Kali yuga but there are many mini transformations
that are part of natural cycles that may happen with the ending of this Mayan calendar.
However, the chart for 21 december 2012 does not show any major planetary signatures.

According to Vedic Astrology 2011 was a much more complex and transformative year. (I agree, T.)
The time for major change signalled by the winter solstice eclipse of 21 December 2010 followed by
Jupiter, Rahu and other planets crossing over gandanta degrees in 2011. Rahu Ketu were debilitated
and many tough energies to confront. So much happened, the Japan Tsunami and nuclear meltdown,
the other disrutive natural disasters, Arab Spring, the death/overthrow of dictators,
killing of Osama Bin Laden and more.

In 2012, the most complex energy is concentrated around May June : the eclipse of 20 May, Venus’s
transit in front of the Sun and Jupiter Ketu conjunction – these planetary energies have potential to
cause disruption and natural disasters in China, Japan and western USA
( as they fall under the path of the May eclipse).
