bajra roti or bajra bhakri are flat breads made from millet flour.
bajra is the hindi word for pearl millet. these flat breads are gluten free and an excellent nutritious option for people having gluten intolerance and for everybody else too.
they are very easy to make and they make a good accompaniment to dal or any indian vegetable based curry dish.
on some days i make rotis from bajra or jowar/sorghum flour. somedays it is multigrain flour rotis.
sometimes i mix all the flours and make rotis. since rotis are a staple in my house, i make various rotis with various millets . i even make rotis from ragi/finger millet flour on some days. millets are healthy grains. so do try to include them in your diet.
i always knead these millet rotis in hot water. the dough become pliable and easy to roll when using hot water. the rotis have a soft texture too. you can also knead the dough in warm water.
i had served the bajra rotis with bharli vangi – stuffed aubergines in peanut-coconut-sesame gravy. the combo was really good. you can also serve the bajra rotis with any any dal. they would even taste great with a good north indian, maharashtrian or gujarati vegetable or legumes curry.
step by step recipe for making bajra rotis:
1: first heat the water. the water should be hot. switch off the fire. then add oil plus salt. mix well.
2: add the bajra flour to the water or vice versa.
3: mix with a spoon if the water is hot. if you use warm water, then you can just use your hands for mixing.
4: gather the mixed dough and knead to a smooth dough.
5: pinch a small or medium sized ball, flatten it and dust with some bajra flour.
6: with your palms flatten the dough. i am not good in this. so fold a ziplock bag, place the dough ball in between and roll with a rolling pin. dust flour if required.
7: gently remove the flat uncooked bread from the ziplock bag and place it on a hot tava or flat pan.
8: cook on side. flip and cook the other side. flip a couple of times and cook til brown spots appear on both sides. apply some oil or ghee on top. stack all the rotis in a roti basket or casserole.
9: you can serve them hot or warm with an indian vegetable curry, dal or side veggie dish.

Awesome, thank-you Melodie!
New Group: Healthy Living and Healthy Eating
Oh Wow !! That group sounds great Melodie!! And of course I will share some about herbs, what little I know and worked for me, and also some simple nutritious recipes!! I have been Type1 Diabetic for 48yrs, Insulin since age 8yrs and it's also an autoimmune disease. Then, later on in life after having a reasonably fit and well time of it, i start getting the other autoimmune diseases as well. I have Polyneuropathy which is extensive nerve damage peripherally and in the muscles. A few decades now of not being able to work, pensioned off, and hubby dying almost 8yrs ago with only my two dogs as companions/family!!! I have to cope a lot on my own and use a mobility walker to walk to the shops, or catch the bus. Every illness and incapacity has turned out to be an awakening of some kind, spiritually within, so I give thanks for my illness!!!
Sorry about your illnesses and your husband's, but at least you have each other and that is wonderful.
I only started computering 5ysr ago and joined spiritual websites as my hubby and I were deeply involved in spiritual awakening and also helping others from our experiences. Now, my time is my own, a solitary life but I love to walk to the shops and just be with people. Computering has opened up a whole new life for me, am so grateful for all the wonderful and loving folks i have met. Catch you later Melodie, it's my afternoon here in Australia, Tues. Much love, Tara.
That's a great idea. I have the herb and plant group and elsewhere I split the group into one with just Herbs and Plants for health, and the other was food for health. I will go and look at opening it and call it "Healthy Living and Healthy Eating" as that is a good name and easily understood by all. I would be more than happy if you helped me with the posts on it.
As I said before, I am not well, I have lots of Autoimmune diseases that run me down, my husband has been diagnosed 13 years ago now with a cancer that is not curable. They said 6/7 years with it, so he is doing the right things. We use natural herbs,Vits, Mins, and plants for him. I have started to take what I can for my immune system but it's so expensive when you don't have spare cash and he is more important because of the type of illness, its a waiting game, very stressful over the years, and I am sure that's what finally brought on all the problems I now have with my health. I was so fit and energetic up until about 46, then it started to go downhill. I never ever thought I would be like this. We manage though, the same as many people around the world. I know there are many other people with a lot worse things than us.
I have always been very interested in natural healing with herbs and plants. I think everyone will need to go back to these at some stage. Its such a shame that a lot of the old ways with plants have been lost within family groups. Anyway, its too late for me tonight so I will try and make a start on it tomorrow. I will let you know when its ready. Love and Blessings. Melodie
Hi Melodie, the website that told me that had a Wellness Group, I can't remember what the exact name is, but perhaps a name that suggests everything concerned with keeping well, like healthy food, any news on types of food, exchanging recipes, etc., even health shakes.....You'd be surprised how many people really like that sort of thing and can share from their own knowledge. There are so many great recipes, and our food also is about healing and keeping our bodies healthy. I would contribute, for sure!! I love searching for recipes, etc.and any news on health. Perhaps "Healthy Living and Healthy Eating" just for an example. It's up to you and if you have the inclination. Thanks for asking, much love, Tara.
Dear Melodie, it certainly doesn't upset me, I just asked a question in order to understand.
Not everyone who asks a question is angry or upset, it is a matter of just understanding.
Some people may only be able to get to a computer once a week, or travel miles to one as I know of some on other websites, due to their living in South Africa. Just a question out of curiosity.
It stands out to me because I blog mainly on a website with guidelines, that is all. Also, when I blogged recipes on one site, I was directed to place it in the Group. It gets a little confusing sometimes when going from site to site. I also share on 5 websites, usually about one or maybe two at a time.
Love and Light, Tara. P.S.
I do like your recipes very much, I have no anger or formal complaint.
I have to say, I joined the sites to give something that I can give freely. I am not a person that needs or wants to stand out, or be centre on attention, far from it. I just want to please people with some interesting reads. No more than that. I'm sorry if this upsets you, I certainly didn't intend to upset anyone, just to do what I am able to do. Blessings. Melodie
Hi Melodie, in fairness to everyone, why do you post so many in blog section at the one time?
Is there a group for cooking and recipes? At another spiritual website, they have a rule of fairness that bloggers can only post a max. of 4 per 24hrs so that they don't push everyone else's articles off the front page.
It's just something that I've noticed and just wanted to ask. There is no competition in blogging as far as I'm concerned, just posting when I find something special I feel may help others.
Peace and Light, Tara *~~
