Walking the Buddha’s Teachings – Compassion at Work

As we go through life, we face many joys, discoveries, problems and tribulations -- all sorts of ups and downs, no different from the "snake and ladder" board game we loved playing during our childhood.

On the path of Dharma, we are encouraged to view difficulties as opportunities for awakening, not simply as road blocks. The 3-fold training of morality, meditation and wisdom (Noble 8-fold Path) gives us tools to work with what arises as arising, whether good or bad, happy or sad.

In this world of duality, every experience has its shadow.
"Metta" -- the wish that others may be happy and "karuna" that they be free from suffering are marked by the fact that at times, we can help, but many times we cannot. And if we cannot, we have to cultivate acceptance rather than despair, anger and frustration. It is always so lonely to know what is going on, yet unable to fix it. We often give excuses that each of us is a traveler, meaning we cannot walk the path of another, nor another walk the path for us.

As we grow and develop and learn from our experience, we are more likely to be able to help people who are worse off than us. Although everyone of us must face one's individual journey through life alone, we can choose to travel together, bound by the vow of bodhicitta of compassion, loving-kindness and wisdom.

Bodhisattvas proclaim that if we could do something positive we should just do it. So why worry? And they also say that if we cannot do something about a problem, we should accept that.
Walking the path of the Buddha literally means "Compassion and Wisdom in skilful application / action". Taking a leaf from Ven Hui Li's spirit of such a path, plse see video clips below.
