Shed all that is not worth Keeping!

He who can curb his anger as soon as it arises,
as a timel y medicine will check the snake's venom
that so quickl y spreads, such a monk gives up both
the here and the be y ond, just as a snake sheds
its worn-out skin.

He who entirel y cuts off his lust as when entering
a pond one uproots lotus plants such a monk gives
up both the here and the be y ond, just as a snake
sheds its worn-out skin.

He who entirel y cuts off all craving by drying up
its fierce and rapid flow, such a monk gives up
both the here and the be y ond, just as a snake
sheds its worn-out skin.

He who entirel y blots out the conceit "I Am" as
the wind demolishes a fragile bamboo bridge,
such a monk gives up the here and the be y ond,
just as a snake sheds its worn-out skin.

He who does not find core or substance in an y of
the realms of being, like flowers which are vainl y
sought in the fig trees that bear no flowers,
such a monk gives up the here and the be y ond,
just as a snake sheds its worn-out skin.
